Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about occupational therapy, our process, and how we support children and families at VanKids.

What is Occupational Therapy? expand_more
Occupational Therapy (OT) is a regulated health profession that supports children and youth in developing the skills they need for everyday life, including play, learning, self-care, movement, and social participation. Occupational Therapists are licensed professionals who complete a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy and must be registered with their provincial regulatory college (CHCPBC) in order to practice. They are trained to assess development, identify challenges, create treatment plans, and provide evidence-based interventions tailored to each child’s needs.
How do I know if my child needs therapy? expand_more
You may consider an OT assessment if your child is experiencing challenges with attention, emotional regulation, motor skills, social skills, sensory processing, or daily routines such as dressing, eating, or handwriting. If something is impacting their participation at home, school, or in the community, OT can help determine what supports may be beneficial.
What age range do you serve? expand_more
We work with children and youth from early childhood through adolescence (ages 2-18).
How long is each session? expand_more
Each session is 60 minutes in total and includes approximately 50 minutes of direct therapy, 5 minutes of caregiver consultation, and 5 minutes of documentation and planning.
Is therapy covered by insurance? expand_more
Occupational therapy is often covered by extended health insurance plans, but coverage varies depending on your provider and policy. We recommend checking directly with your insurance company to confirm your specific benefits for “Occupational Therapy” services. Families may also be eligible for funding through school-based supports, government programs, or charitable organizations depending on their situation.
What should we expect in the first visit? expand_more
The first visit is a play-based, rapport-building assessment. We observe your child during natural play and structured activities while also speaking with caregivers about your concerns, goals, and priorities. This helps us understand your child’s strengths and challenges so we can create a personalized plan that supports their development.
Do I need a doctor’s referral for occupational therapy? expand_more
No, a doctor’s referral is not required to access occupational therapy services. Families can contact VanKids directly to book an assessment or consultation.
Can parents stay during the therapy session? expand_more
Yes — parent involvement is often encouraged during therapy sessions. Having parents present can help support carryover of strategies at home, improve collaboration, and provide opportunities for education and discussion throughout the therapy process.
What assessments do you use? expand_more
Assessments may include a combination of standardized assessments and/or informal, play-based observations to better understand your child’s strengths, challenges, and developmental needs.
