Beyond the clinic
Ten Days in Guatemala
In August 2025, Leo, our OT, spent 10 days in Guatemala with Impact Ministries, serving children and families in the rural community of Tactic. During the trip, he ran a small OT clinic and visited homes and classrooms, using play-based approaches to support fine and gross motor development, sensory and emotional regulation, and executive functioning. Working alongside local OT assistants and communicating with families through interpreters reinforced for Leo the importance of family-centred, collaborative and neurodiversity-affirming care. The experience strengthened his belief that when children and families feel supported and empowered, they have more opportunities to thrive — a belief he brings back to his pediatric occupational therapy work in Vancouver, British Columbia.
